Episode 86: Show notes

Today, I want to dive into a super important topic for all my makeup friends: adaptability.
Let’s face it, in our ever-changing world of film and TV, being adaptable isn’t just a skill – it’s a necessity.

I’ve got some pretty wild stories, insightful tips, and practical advice to help you become the chameleon every set needs.

The Unexpected Trailer Swap: A Lesson in Adaptability

Not too long ago, I was on a five-day project that consisted of two prep days and three shoot days.

By the time Wednesday came around, we were off to the first of our different shooting locations. Come Friday, I found myself at a brand new, unfamiliar location. And then came the moment of truth—my makeup trailer was swapped overnight due to a flat tire. Suddenly, I had to navigate a completely new setup.

Imagine my surprise when the trailer I walked into wasn’t the familiar one I’d been working out of. It was quite bizarre, as the floor was the first thing I noticed. It was a completely different color. And my logical (early morning ha!) brain quickly tried to rationalize how exactly the floor had changed color overnight.

And then I looked around, and it began to sink in.

This was an entirely different makeup trailer. I laughed.

And very quickly, had to roll with it and figure out how to make it work.

This situation is what inspired this episode on the importance of adaptability.

What Is Adaptability?

Adaptation is defined as changing something or your behavior to suit a new purpose or situation. For us makeup artists, it means being flexible with changing circumstances, schedules, plans, and even makeup looks.
Change is our constant companion in fast-paced environments like movie sets or TV shoots. Embracing it is the only way to survive—and thrive.

Common Scenarios Requiring Adaptability

Adaptability doesn’t just happen overnight; it requires practice and a change in mindset. Here are some common situations that will test your flexibility:

  • Last-minute script changes: These can impact your meticulously planned makeup looks.
  • Weather conditions: Outdoor shoots can be unpredictable, necessitating quick makeup adjustments.
  • Production schedule changes: These often result in tight time constraints.
  • Unfamiliar working environments: Like my trailer swap story, you’ll often need to work in new, unfamiliar spaces.

Tips for Becoming More Adaptable

How can we train ourselves to be more adaptable on set? Here are some tips to get you started:

  • Practice flexibility: Experiment with different styles and designs. This will prepare you for unexpected changes.
  • Stay updated: Keep an eye on the latest tools and products that offer quicker solutions.
  • Open to learning: Learning new techniques and staying updated with technology like Zbrush and Nomad will keep you ahead.
  • Mindset shifts: View challenges as opportunities for growth. Don’t get too attached to any single makeup look or design.

Adaptability in Makeup Artistry: Career Growth and Networking

Embracing change doesn’t just make your job easier; it also boosts your career development. It improves client and actor relations and opens up more networking opportunities. Being adaptable makes you a versatile artist, capable of handling diverse and challenging projects.

Be the Chameleon

So, with all that being said, I encourage you to embrace change and continuously look for ways to enhance your skills.
Not just in the literal sense of makeup artistry but also in the broader aspects of our work on set. Things in our industry change in the blink of an eye, and being prepared for these rapid changes makes you better suited for the job.

I hope you feel more prepared for your next unexpected challenge, whatever that may be. Stay fabulous, stay adaptable, and remember, always be the chameleon!
