The product in focus here might just surprise you.

Because it’s an unexpected favorite makeup product that has been an absolute game-changer for me.

So, prepare to be intrigued because we’re talking about none other than the MAC Shape and Shade Brow Tint.

Now, I know what you might be thinking – brow tint for men?

Yes, exactly! As I revealed inside this podcast episode, this double-sided brow pen has become my secret weapon in male grooming. And I’d love to share why this product has bowled me over and become a staple in my makeup kit for years.

Can I just start by saying that these pens are pretty much an absolute marvel?

They come with one tapered felt tip and a rounded sponge end for filling and powdering, but it’s the tapered point that works wonders for me. It allows me to effortlessly paint single hairs and work on multiple hairs simultaneously, all while achieving a natural look that seamlessly blends into the skin and hair.
The pigment is quite transparent, which is crucial for creating a subtle and natural effect, especially for men’s grooming.

In the world of film and TV makeup, men’s grooming plays a significant role – perhaps much larger than many might realize.
It goes beyond just applying makeup; it involves tidying brows, grooming facial hair, and addressing any other areas where hair growth may require attention.

I’ve observed that some makeup artists may feel apprehensive or inexperienced when it comes to men’s grooming and find themselves guilty of excessive use of products like foundation and concealer. Or worse still, be completely unaware of the overuse of these products.

But the art of men’s grooming exists in the nuances, the subtle touch that enhances without overpowering.

This is where the MAC Shape and Shade Brow Tint truly shines.

What’s particularly remarkable about these brow tint pens is their versatility.

Not only do they help in defining and tidying up brow shapes, but they also come in handy for tinting stray white hairs in brows, lashes, beards, and sideburns.
They aid in defining beard lines, mustache lines, and sideburn lines, ensuring clean edges and lines that are essential for polished male grooming.

The beauty of these pens lies in their natural shades – from lighter shades and my fave – taupe to deeper tones like spiked or stud. They do not sway too red and blend seamlessly with the male complexion. Moreover, the products absorb into the hair like ink, leaving behind a natural, non-flaky hairlike finish.

As someone who takes tremendous pride in the work that often goes unnoticed, I find that men’s grooming is where the magic truly happens.

It’s the art of making an impact without leaving a visible trace. The MAC Shape and Shade Brow Tint pens embodies this perfectly, quietly and efficiently enhancing the male features without overtly stealing the limelight.

So, whether you’re a makeup artist, a beauty enthusiast intrigued by the world of male grooming, or someone seeking versatile and reliable products for your grooming routine, I cannot recommend these brow tint pens enough. Trust me, they have been by my side for years, and they have never let me down.

Episode Transcript

[00:00:00]: Today, I wanted to share with you one of my all time favorite makeup products, and I think you might be more than just a little bit surprised by this one.

It’s not my Pat McGrath Mothership Palette.
And no, it’s not the MAC Velvet Teddy lippy. Although, just uttering those words is kind of making me want to pop it on right now.

And it’s not even my lineage lip sleeping mask either.
Nope.
Drumroll, please. It is the MAC Shape and Shade Brow Tint. Are you surprised? Are you shocked?

[00:00:39]: Well, these pens are double-sided brow pens that include one tapered felt-tip end, and that’s where I spend most of my time, to be honest. And the other end is a rounded sponge end to fill and powder. But truth be told, I almost never use that side.

For me, these pens are almost entirely used on men.

[00:01:37]: Yep, they are my male grooming secret weapon.

For me, they do everything from tidying up and defining eyebrow shapes, to tinting stray white hairs in brows, lashes, beards, and sideburns and defining beard lines, moustache lines or sideburn lines and creating clean edges and clean lines.

I love them because they’re just so subtle. The shades are perfect and incredibly natural. Whether you need a true taupe shade or a deeper tone like spiked or stud, they’re not too red and read very well on the male complexion. Now, word of warning, even though they do contain alcohol, they will wash off if you’re not careful. But for men and with a light setting spray, they work wonders.

And I don’t think I’ve ever had that moment where the color has just disappeared. I’ve never had any issues.

[00:02:32]: I think that the reason that these pens work so well for me is because of how transparent the pigment is.

The tapered point on the pen gives me the perfect tool to paint single hairs with ease, but also to quickly use it on hairs at the same time. And the product looks completely natural on the skin and into the hair all at once.

[00:02:53]: It absorbs into the hairs like an ink would, and without looking heavy or flaky like some other hair color products can do.

So why is it important to know this and, moreover, be skilled in men’s grooming? Well, men’s grooming is a much bigger part of being a movie or tv makeup artist than a lot of us care to think.

[00:03:13]: And I suspect that there are a lot of very strong beauty makeup artists out there that are either scared or inexperienced when it comes to men’s grooming. You probably see it, too.
Makeup artists using way too much foundation, concealer, or just product in general, and then neglecting simple grooming techniques such as tidying brows, facial hair, and any extraneous hair – to be honest, any of those other places that hair can grow.

Now, I do love men’s grooming as part of our work as makeup artists, and I suspect that this is because it feels like the work that goes unseen is the most successful work. Right?

Because nobody knows that you’ve done anything at all.

And I guess that’s why I love these brow tint pens so much. They just work for me. And especially in men’s grooming, they are a handy tool to have in your back pocket. So next time you might be given a male client or performer, you’ll be armed and at the ready with products that you know will work a treat

Short episode for today, but I had to talk to you about the MAC Shape and Shade Brow Tint pens. They’ve been in my kit for years now, and they’ve just always been there. I’ve always been able to rely on them, so I’m happy to finally bring them to you. All right, we’ll see you next time.
