Episode 80: Show notes
There’s always something new to learn and share in this fruity delicious world of makeup.
I don’t know about you, but one of those persistent challenges I face on the job is the constant battle of keeping lipstick within the lines, yep like one of those coloring in books, especially during neverending shoot days.
Lipstick just always wants to travel outwards like the opening credits of Game of Thrones (cue music). Add to that a different time period to that, and you have to be on constant lip patrol.
If you’re struggling with this issue too, well, you’re in luck, my friend! I’ve been busting at the seams to tell you about this one simple product that can work wonders for keeping your lipstick looking flawless: the Urban Decay Ozone Lip Pencil.
First things first, let me extend a heartfelt thanks to Kim Ayers, an incredible makeup artist who introduced me to this gem years ago. And before we get into it, I just want to add that
when I receive lovely feedback from fellow artists about how open I am to sharing my techniques, it fills me with so much gratitude and joy.
Sharing knowledge and encouraging each other should always be at the forefront of our profession. So, in the very spirit of camaraderie and continuous improvement (and more than a gentle nod to the Godfather Dick Smith), let’s dive into how you can prevent lipstick feathering with this one little magic wand, well, it’s actually just a lip primer. But it’s how you use it that makes all the difference…
Urban Decay Ozone Lip Pencil isn’t your typical lip liner; it’s a translucent, waxy primer, actually, a clear lip liner that works wonders to prevent lipstick from bleeding out into those pesky fine lines around the lips.
However, it’s the way I use it might surprise you, as it’s a bit of a twist on the traditional method. Curious a bit?
Imagine, if you will, treating this lip pencil almost like a reverse liner. The goal is to create an invisible barrier around the lips.
How to Apply the Ozone Lip Liner (and break the rules!)
1. Prepare Your Lips
The often neglected secret to a perfect lipstick application starts with lip prep. Ensure your lips are exfoliated and hydrated. You certainly don’t want to start off with flaky or dry lips, as this process is sure to fail if you do.
So, first thing – a nifty little lip exfoliator brush combined with a sugar lip scrub works wonders. And then round up with your favorite go to lip balm. If this is the very first step in your makeup routine, by the time you get to your lips, they’re plump, smooth, and ready.
2. Foundation Setting
Remember to apply your foundation right up to the lip line. This gives an ideal surface for the Ozone Lip Pencil to bond to. And the added product ensures the barrier works effectively against feathering.
3. Applying the Ozone Lip Pencil
Instead of lining your lips directly with it, outline the outer edges of your lips. This translucent waxy lip pencil acts like a sealant, preventing your lip colour from bleeding beyond the borders of your lips.
It may feel a little weird the first few times, kind of unnatural going outside the actual lip area, but trust me, it’s super effective.
4. Fill in with Lip Liner and Lipstick
Once you have the Ozone transparent lip liner in place, go ahead and proceed with your regular lip liner (on your natural lip line) and fill in with one of your favorite lip products.
This technique ensures the color stays put, and you avoid any feathering or bleeding.
Optional Tips for Extra Lip Longevity
If you’re facing a long day, consider using the blot, powder (with your fave translucent powder), and repeat method to set the lipstick even further.
Depending on the finish you’re after and the day’s demands, this can make a noticeable difference.
What makes the Urban Decay Ozone Lip Pencil stand out is its versatility and ease of use. Because remember, it is designed to be used as a lip primer.
Plus, it’s long-lasting and completely invisible, which means it’ll work a treat for any lipstick shade or finish. I recommend pairing it with the Urban Decay pencil sharpener to keep it precise and clean for each application.
And if all else fails or if this technique just freaks you out altogether, try it a different way. Try applying your regular lip liner first – on your lip liner and exactly where you want it. This will give you a visible guideline for where the Ozone pencil needs to go, ensuring you don’t make any mistakes.
And then, once your lip liner is on, apply your Ozone lip pencil outside of your lips, allowing the application to butt up to (but not over) your lip pencil line.
Once you’re happy with that, go ahead and finish off your lip look with your lippy of choice for the day.
Remember, makeup is all about experimenting and finding what works best for you. This technique might seem more than a tad counterintuitive at first, but bending the rules often yields the best results.
So, head to Sephora, grab an Urban Decay Ozone Lip Pencil, and give it a try. You might just discover a new favorite in your makeup arsenal that transforms your lipstick game and stop that lipstick bleeding once and for all!
