Episode 89: Show notes

a person is holding a belt full of makeup brushes

As a makeup artist, I’ve always had a keen eye for the tools of our trade. With 30 years in the film and television industry, I’ve graduated from novice to expert, but one thing remains constant – the importance of a reliable makeup brush kit.

Especially now, as our industry pivots around its bustling routine, upgrading and streamlining my brush kit has been a priority.

If you’re starting out or looking to revamp your collection without breaking the bank, I’ve gathered insights to help you build an efficient, affordable brush kit.

First and foremost, let’s discuss the importance of identifying what you need.

It’s all too easy to get distracted by pretty brushes or Instagram ads, but a targeted search is crucial.

Focus on acquiring good-quality and versatile brushes that support different makeup techniques.

One brand that stands out in affordability and efficiency is Real Techniques.

I recall a trip to Australia where, sans kit, I relied entirely on Real Techniques brushes from a local Target. They performed admirably, suitable for both beauty and special effects makeup. The versatility they offer is impressive, especially when you’re in a pinch.

When it comes to beauty brushes, understanding the variety available is essential. Let’s start with foundation brushes.

Opt for dense, synthetic brushes as they are more affordable and just as efficient as natural hair fibers. Real Techniques excels in this area. For eyeshadow, look into blending brushes from brands like Elf and BH Cosmetics. Their fluffy blending brushes are fantastic for both novices and professionals.

Moving on to blush and powder brushes, multifunctionality is key. Set brushes from brands like Eco Tools are a great choice—they’re not only easy to clean but also retain their shape exceptionally well. Again, Elf ranks high on my list for their short-handled brushes, which are perfect for on-set kits.

Speaking of on-set kits, here’s a golden tip: always keep a compact set of brushes handy.

A minimal but essential collection – think a large powder brush, an eyeshadow blending brush, a concealer brush, a foundation brush, a lip brush, and maybe a couple of mascara wands – is invaluable. This compact kit ensures you’re always prepared for unexpected situations, and keeping these brushes exclusively in your set bag guarantees they’re always ready.

Retractable lip brushes deserve a special mention. They’ve been a game-changer for me.

Brands like Besame, Bdellium, MAC, and Lily Lolo offer fantastic retractables. Particularly, brushes with lids that transform into handles are both practical and innovative.

Special effects brushes are another beast entirely.

Don’t overlook art shops, which are treasure troves for special effects brushes.

Glue brushes, thin detailed brushes, and large glue brushes can all be found at art stores at an affordable cost. For paint application in special effects, look into watercolor or acrylic brushes from brands like Princeton or Windsor & Newton. These brushes withstand various paints and solvents, proving to be reliable for special effects makeups.

Maintenance is paramount when it comes to longevity.

Proper cleaning, thorough drying, and decent storage can make even the most affordable brushes last for years, if not decades. I’ve shared detailed brush care tips in a previous post, which I’ll link in the show notes, so do check that out if you’re interested.

A mix of beauty and special effects brushes is vital regardless of your specialty.

And remember, building your kit is an ongoing process. Brushes will come and go, but what remains is your commitment to your craft.

Labeling your brushes (a pop of nail polish on the handle works wonders) ensures your tools stay uniquely yours.

I hope this guide helps you broaden your scope of brush options, ensuring you don’t have to spend a fortune for a well-rounded kit. After all, a well-prepared artist is a confident artist.

So go ahead, explore, build, and streamline your makeup brush kit.

Until next time, happy brushing!
