Why Choose Bronze Leg Makeup Over a Tanner?

Both bronze leg makeup products and tanners can do a great job covering skin imperfections and giving you a glossy look. However, bronze leg makeup can be a great idea if you are looking for gorgeous, flawless legs in seconds.

A self-tanner contains the active ingredient dihydroxyacetone, or DHA, a color additive that reacts with your skin to turn it darker. The color lasts for several days, depending on how much you shower or sweat and if you moisturize.

On the other hand, bronze leg makeup gives you a glow but doesn’t tan your skin. The bronze glow only lasts a few hours to days. Think of it as a layer of color that you apply on your legs that can wash off.

What’s more, tanners often have a distinctive smell because of the DHA. If you can’t tolerate that scent, then bronze can be a great way to enhance your legs.

Why Shouldn’t I Use These Products on My Face?

Bronze leg makeup and tanners give your legs a radiant glow while concealing imperfections.

You may even feel compelled to try it on your face too.

However, experts highly discourage doing this because some ingredients may not be lip-safe, eyelid-safe, or irritant-free.

Creams, liquids, and powders formulated for the legs may irritate the more sensitive skin on your face.

Your leg’s skin is tougher and thicker than the skin on your face. And because of this, brands can get away with putting some ingredients or fragrances in leg makeup.

In many cases, it is not advised to use these products on your face. They can contain ingredients that are often too heavy for the face.

Achieving a natural-looking tan requires adequate preparation. Follow these tips on how best to prepare your legs before applying a tanner and bronze leg makeup.

• Moisturize 3 to 4 days before applying your leg makeup
• Moisturize your legs and focus more on dry areas like feet and knees so that the tan appears more natural in these areas.
• Wax 24 to 48 hours before application
• If you are planning to wax, you should do it in advance. This will prevent tiny droplets of leg makeup or tanner from settling in the follicles where you shave the hairs.
• Exfoliate the skin
• Exfoliate your skin in the shower to help get rid of the dead skin cells. Scrub the legs gently with an exfoliating soap to get rid of dryness, bumps, and flakes. Pay attention to areas like the knee that are more prone to skin build-up and bumps.
• Allow your legs to dry.
• Wait for about 30 – 60 minutes for your skin to dry completely after the shower. Don’t apply any product on your legs. You can use this time to determine where your makeup and tan should start and end.

How to Maintain a Long-Lasting Tan on Your Legs

Exfoliate before application.

This is the first rule to maintaining a long-lasting tan on your legs is to exfoliate.

A gentle exfoliation ensures your tanner will be applied to fresh, smooth skin and will hold nicely.

But be careful not to overdo it, as you can irritate your skin. Rubbing your skin raw will dry it out and interfere with the self-tanner.

Don’t shower or work out a few hours after application.

Ensure your skin stays dry for at least 6 to 8 hours after applying self-tanner.

Sweating or showering too soon will fade your tan much faster.

You also want to keep your showers cool and short after application to prevent your skin from drying out.

Avoid chlorine, saunas, and saltwater for the week after application.

Hydrate and moisturize.

Keep your skin moisturized to maintain your tan and to keep you from drying out. Dry oil, moisturizing body wash, and lotion are all great ways to hydrate your body.

And don’t forget to drink lots of water.

Avoid using harsh products.

Try to avoid full-strength products, waxing strips, and anything with alcohol.
Reapply your tanner
You may have to reapply your tanner in areas that are fading faster than the rest.
In which case, you’ll need to exfoliate (lightly) and reapply a thin layer of tanner.
