Episode 96: Show notes

If you’ve ever felt like just another face in the crowd of talented makeup artists, you’re not alone.

Today, I want to peel back the layers on what really makes you stand out and unforgettable in our industry – and spoiler: it’s not your perfectly curated kit or that killer eyeliner flick.

Ready to discover the magic ingredient that will take your makeup artist career to the next level? Let’s dive in.

Why Fitting In Holds Your Career Back

After 30 years in the world of film and TV makeup, I’ve seen it over and over and over again – the urge to blend in.
We all want to feel like we belong, especially in a competitive industry like ours. But here’s the truth I wish every new (and even mid-career) artist knew: blending in is career quicksand.

The Trap of “Blending In” in the Makeup Industry

Too many of us believe that if we just match everyone else, we’ll be accepted or get hired. The reality? Your career grows when you bring something irreplaceable to the table. Designers, department heads, and even actors remember you for what makes you different – not for following the crowd.

What Makes You Unforgettable as a Makeup Artist?

Finding your uniqueness as an artist isn’t about proficiency in markety jargon like “transformation statements” or “brand values.” These are simply tools to help you gain clarity. But we’ll get to those later 🙂

When you know exactly what you bring to set, others in the industry see it too. Clarity is power, my friend.

Real Examples of Creative Uniqueness

You may already have something unforgettable, even if you haven’t recognized it yet:

  • Maybe you radiate calm when everyone else is losing the plot.
  • Perhaps you have a gold-star eye for continuity that saves the day.
  • Maybe you’re a special effects problem-solver, a speed demon with the brushes, or someone who always brings a sense of humor and empathy.
  • Or you just make actors feel right at home in your chair – and that is pure gold.

It’s your quirks and unique strengths that set you apart, not just your technical skills.

A Simple Exercise to Define Your Artist Signature

Let’s get practical. Grab a notebook, open your phone’s notes, or just mull this over during your commute.

Ask yourself these three questions:

  1. What do people consistently thank me for on set?
    • Not what you think you’re good at, but what others actually say.
  2. When do I feel most “in flow” doing makeup?
    • This is usually where your magic comes alive.
  3. What’s something I can’t help but do differently from everyone else?
    • Don’t limit yourself to makeup techniques—sometimes it’s your problem-solving style or the specific way you approach a challenge.

You don’t have to love your quirks just yet – in fact, you don’t even have to like them. But start noticing them, and you’ll soon see how valuable they really are.

Building a Makeup Artist Career That Lasts

In my Makeup Artist Career Blueprint, I dive even deeper into finding your niche, your identity, and yes, even those dreaded “brand values.”
But this isn’t just marketing jargon.
These foundation stones help you shift your mindset and build the kind of professional confidence that attracts opportunities.

Standing Out is About Owning Who You Are

You are not here to be a carbon copy of the next artist on set. You are the sum of your experiences, instincts, artistry, and heart. No one else could create exactly what you do – even if they tried.

Standing out doesn’t mean shouting the loudest. It means truly embracing your difference. When you see it, everyone else will too.

Ready to Go Deeper on Your Makeup Artist Journey?

If you loved this pause for reflection, there’s a whole section on personal branding, niche clarity, and career positioning in my Makeup Artist Career Blueprint. Check the show notes or DM me the word “BLUE” on Instagram for more info. I truly wish I’d had this guide 30 years ago!

Remember: Stay curious. Stay creative. Most importantly, stay you. You are the only version of yourself this industry will ever get – hold onto that and embrace it.
