Episode 21: Show notes

Inside this episode, we’re diving into the world of shimmer eyeshadows.

Now, I must confess, I have always been a firm believer in breaking the so-called rules of makeup.

After all, it’s your face, and you should do whatever makes you feel good.

So, join me as I share my personal journey and somewhat newfound love for cream eyeshadows

As a seasoned film and TV makeup artist with over 25 years of experience, I’ve seen my fair share of trends come and go. (Hello 90s eyebrows, I welcome you back into the world, once again….)

One trend that seemed etched in stone was the notion that once you have a few what you may hear me call “life experience lines” around your eyes, matte eyeshadows should be your go-to option to create flattering looks.

But hey, where’s the fun in that?

Enter shimmer eyeshadows, the glimmering gems that can transform your makeup game.

Now, before you recoil in skepticism and envision a nightmare of 1980s flashbacks, let me assure you that shimmer has come a long way.

In fact, nowadays, cream eyeshadows have stolen my heart and become an indispensable part of my daily makeup routine.

So, what’s so great about cream eyeshadows, you ask?

Let me count the ways.

First and foremost, they offer a fuss-free application with no fallout.

Gone are the days of shimmery particles ruining the rest of your makeup. Cream eyeshadows glide on smoothly and stay put all day, giving you the peace of mind you deserve.

But there’s more to it than just convenience. Cream eyeshadows often incorporate nourishing skincare ingredients, adding an extra layer of love to your delicate eyelids.

Not only do they enhance your beauty, but they also pamper and protect your skin.

Now, let’s talk about the versatility of cream eyeshadows. The range of gorgeous, flattering shades available is endless.
From neutral tones to vibrant hues, there’s a color to suit every mood and occasion.

Whether you prefer a sultry, smoky eye or a soft, natural look, cream eyeshadows have got you covered.

In my personal makeup kit, two standout products have made their mark.

The RMS Eye Polish in Myth remains a forever favorite, delivering a blendable, long-lasting shimmer that adds a touch of magic to any look.
And let’s not forget the delightful Just a Sec by Jones Road, especially in the shade Pewter.

Its spongy texture lends a unique charm that I simply adore.

Now that we’ve uncovered the wonders of cream eyeshadows, let me share a little technique I like to call “placement is key.”

When choosing a shade, consider its tone in relation to your skin.

For darker shades, use them in your eye crease area or along the contour of your eyelid to create a soft, sculpted shape.
This way, you can achieve depth and dimension while still enjoying the shimmer.

If you opt for lighter shades, apply them to the center of your eyelid to create a striking highlight. This technique accentuates the natural shape of your eye, turning heads wherever you go.

And don’t forget the brow bone! A gentle sweep of shimmer just below the outer half of your eyebrow adds a subtle yet stunning highlight.

Remember, eye makeup is an art form that allows you to sculpt and accentuate the unique features of your face.

So, the next time you reach for your favorite cream-shimmer eyeshadow, let your imagination run wild.

Experiment, play, and have fun.

As long as it’s a cream, the possibilities are endless.

In a world where rules often confine creativity, the shimmering allure of cream eyeshadows breaks all boundaries.

Embrace the shimmer and embrace your individuality.

Unleash your inner artist and let those eyes sparkle! That’s it for today’s lesson on the 5 Minute Face Talk podcast. I hope you’ve enjoyed this journey into the world of shimmer eyeshadows as much as I have. Remember, your face is your canvas, and you are the master of your own beauty. Until next time, keep shimmering and stay fabulous! – Kerrin

Episode Transcript

[00:00:00]: There seems to be this unspoken rule I see online.

I’ve discussed it myself at lengths, and I hear that when it comes to makeup, I feel like I say that all the time.
When it comes to eye makeup, once you get a few what I like to call life experience lines on and around your eyes that you should only really be using matte eyeshadow shadows to create flattering looks.
Well, I want to tell you, first of all, that there are no rules, and you hear me say this a lot because it’s makeup and it’s your face. So basically, you do whatever you want to on it, do what makes you feel good.

[00:01:17]: It’s very simple. And second, shimmers are fun.
And nowadays, if the thought of a shimmer eyeshadow sends you reluctantly recoiling into some hideous 1980s flashbacks, then I’ll help you breathe a sigh of relief as I tell you to look no further than cream eyeshadows.
They have been such a breath of fresh air for my eyelids, for my makeup, and something that I pretty much don’t go without on the days that I decide to wear eye makeup. Why? No fallout, nourishing skincare ingredients, easy to apply, quick to apply, gorgeous flattering shades, long lasting, smudge free flaking, no flaking, the list goes on.
I am still loving on my RMS Eye Polish in Myth and am a newfound admirer and lover. I love Jones Road, and the product is called Just a Sec, and my favorite shade is Pewter.
But I still can’t work out if I’d classify this as a true cream eyeshadow.

[00:02:22]: It’s so squishy and spongy to use, but I love it all the same.
And I wear my shimmer on my eyes with pride.
Of course, my bougie bestie Armani and the creamy Liquid Eye Tint that will stay where it’s put all day can’t be neglected, so I have to mention the Armani liquid eye tint.

Okay, so this technique, I even named this episode about it, and after it, I guess I was getting carried away. But the idea is that your placement is key to shimmer eyeshadow, and it’s pretty simple, really.

So take a look at the shade of your shimmer eyeshadow. Is it darker than your skin tone? If it is, you want to use it in your eye crease area or on the contour of your eyelid. And if you head for the outer corner, you can create a lovely, soft, sculpted shape despite the fact that you’re using a shimmer product.

[00:03:23]: Now, if the shade is lighter than your skin tone. You want to create a highlight effect by using it in the center of your eyelid, which will help sculpt the eyeball shape of your eyelid.

So effectively, you’re still using shading and highlighting principles, but just in a different way. I like to think it’s sort of flipped on its side a bit. And you can also sweep just under your eyebrow. So just right under the bottom of your eyebrow on the outer half of your brow bone. And this can create a gorgeous soft highlight without being all over your lid. So that’s my one.

[00:04:01]: I mean, kind of two, isn’t it?

Techniques that you can try out next time you wear your favorite shimmer and make sure it’s a cream. Your favorite cream shimmer.
And just have a play and just try and look at eye makeup as a sculpting material that you’re using light and shadow to sculpt and accentuate the forms of your face. Okay, that’s your lesson for today. I will be back very soon on 5 Minute Face Talk. I’ll see you then.
