Episode 25: Show notes
I went down a bit of a rabbit hole recently.
On a quest to understand the cost of my makeup kit (and sadly, how much it will cost to rebuild and replace after having 6 months of no work in 2023, and many months worth of liquid beauty products reached the end of their very short shelf life).
If you have anything even remotely to do with makeup, you’ll be aware of just how costly it can be.
Even when you shop drugstore and middle-of-the-road ranges.
Now, I understand that we all have different budgets, and sometimes splurging on a $300 bottle of foundation just isn’t feasible.
However, it’s fascinating to explore why these high-end brands carry such hefty price tags.
So going into it, one aspect that sets these expensive foundations apart is the inclusion of nourishing skincare ingredients.
These brands can prioritize not just giving you flawless coverage but also taking care of your skin in the process.
Ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, botanical extracts, and vitamins work like a symphony to moisturize, brighten, and even protect the skin.
So, in a way, you’re not just getting a makeup product but also a skincare treatment within that luxurious bottle.
Another factor that contributes to the cost is the meticulous production process and the sourcing of exceptional ingredients.
These high-end brands often go above and beyond to ensure the quality and effectiveness of their products. From using rare and exclusive components to employing cutting-edge technology, they strive to create foundations that provide exceptional results.
And it’s this exclusive attention to detail and commitment to excellence that of course, come at a premium.
Now, I know it might be hard to justify spending hundreds of dollars on foundation, especially when there are waaaay more affordable options available.
But sometimes, it’s worth treating ourselves and indulging in a bit of luxury. (for me, I have to admit, this treatment is going to be out of curiosity more than anything else! I MUST know what $300 foundation feels and looks like)
Plus, there’s always the excitement of experimenting with different products and finding one that truly works wonders for our skin.
So, whether you’re a fan of budget-friendly foundations (I’ll share my faves below in the links) or curious about splurging on a high-end brand, there’s no right or wrong answer.
At the end of the day, it’s all about finding what makes you feel confident and beautiful. And remember, in the world of makeup, there’s something for everyone, regardless of the price tag.
I hope this little exploration into the world of expensive foundation makeup has piqued your interest. As always, on 5 Minute Face Talk, we’re here to explore the best beauty products and find solutions for you.
So keep on listening for more skin-rewarding episodes, and until then, take care of your beautiful self!

Episode Transcript
[00:00:00]: This is a bit of a random episode because I know many of you have been in a similar situation to myself in 2023, where some groups have been striking for most of the year, and that has pretty much dictated the world over that our movie and TV industry has all but fallen to a heap so the work has definitely dried up, and that lends itself to saving money and not spending the way we might have before.
And it just got me thinking about money and the thousands of dollars that women spend on average on beauty products each year. And so I started doing a little bit of searching about how much we spend on foundation.
[00:01:22]: And do you know what I learned? I learned that the most expensive foundation is $300 a bottle.
Can you believe that?
I’d love to think that it’s really good. I mean, I feel like if you’re going to spend $300 on a bottle of foundation, that it should, I don’t know, play movies on your face or really double as a facelift or something, because that is an incredible investment, isn’t it?
So anyway, I did a bit more digging after that, and I was quite surprised.
It’s very interesting just to have a look at what people I mean, it’s not me for sure this year anyway, so I took a look.
So the $300 foundation is called Valmont… I was going to learn how to pronounce this correctly, and I haven’t done it. I’m going to pause and we’ll get back to you.
Hi, everyone.
[00:02:18]: Joanna here from Rescue Spa, showing you how to use some of my favorite products for flawless makeup. The Valmont Elixir de Glacier Teint Precieux is a perfect combination of makeup and skincare. Elixir de Glacier Teint Precieux. Okay, so it’s called Valmont Teint Precieux Elixir. $300 a pop.
And I just did a bit of research, and it’s supposed to do facelifting things while you’re wearing it. So there you go.
[00:03:02]: I’m going to come back. I’m going to revisit this when I’m rich, when I’ve invested in my $300 a bottle.
And then I’ll probably have a glass of it on Saturday night as well, I think.
Okay. And so next on our list, we get to La Prairie Skin Caviar. See that? I’m going to have that with my $300 glass as well.
So we’ve got the wine and we’ve got the caviar, and that’s $280 a pop, so that’s a little bit less.
And then Clé de Peau De Beauté foundation, $270 a jar. And one of my favorite.
[00:03:39]: I’ve been accused of being bougie by loving this brand, but it’s By Terry Eclait Opulent Serum Foundation, just a minuscule $178 a tub.
So even going way down in price from there, relatively speaking, a lot of the foundations that I restock my kit with. And I also switch out in rotation with my own face.
I do switch my foundations a lot, just because my skin feels different some days, and some days I want more coverage.
But they’re usually around the $40 to $50 mark.
I mean, that adds up when you’re talking about professional makeup kits having between ten and twenty or even more shades in a range, doesn’t it?
It’s quite eye-opening, and it’s a lot – it’s a big investment. So at a time when inflation is also on the increase, can you really tell the difference between a $300 bottle of makeup and a $5 bottle of makeup? Well, here’s some of my favorites that are all under $10 at this time, at the time I’m recording.
So first is the Elf flawless foundation. $6 a bottle.
[00:04:53]: NYX Born to Glow is just $8 a tube, Maybelline Fit Me Matte and Poreless Foundation, one of my all-time favorites, is just $7 a bottle.
L’Oreal Paris True Match Lumi Healthy Foundation aka Armani’s Luminous Silk dupe is around $10 a pop.
Black Radiance Foundation stick for more of a full coverage finish is also around $10 a pop.
So what’s the message and what does this mean?
Does it mean that the $300 bottle comes from Mount Everest or that they get certain minerals from the moon that are in it?
Is it really that much more exclusive?
Well, these are questions that I’m just asking because these high-end and I’m talking sky-high-end foundations are products that I haven’t actually ever used or have any experience with.
So I just wanted to mention it and chat about it and get my ball rolling, because I am determined to go out there and at some point in time, try some of these products, if I can, and get back to you, because I think it’s really interesting experiment.
And to be quite honest, I want to do a Pepsi Challenge with these, and I think I’m going to. So, yeah, just stay tuned. Bit of fun.
