A mattifying moisturizer works by controlling your skin’s excess oil production and also helps minimize the surface oils of your skin.
Next time you’re on the lookout for a new moisturizer that can mattify and keep your skins oils in check, keep an eye out for the main ingredients that are used to do just that.

Do I Need to Have Oily Skin in Order to Use a Mattifying Moisturizer?

While a good moisturizer that mattifies is primarily designed to be used for oily individuals or folks with combination skin, this doesn’t mean that you can’t use a mattifying moisturizer if you have normal to dry skin, by any means.
I like to use mattifying moisturizers on set for men quite often as they provide the perfect combination of ingredients to refine a man’s skin without the use of heavy, if any, makeup.

A good mattifying moisturizer can work wonders if you struggle with the overproduction of natural oils on your skin, enlarged pores, or even frequent breakouts.

Now, as you and I know, everyone is different. And each of our faces is different as well.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that if you do have normal, or even dry skin, but you like the benefits a mattifying moisturizer can give you each day, you may need to think about workarounds for your face, to prevent your skin from drying out too much.

You could introduce a hydrating serum at night, or a moisturizing mask, or alternate days between your mattifying moisturizer and your regular moisturizer as well.
And it’s important to be aware that having oily skin doesn’t mean that you should be ignoring the need for skin hydration. In fact, it’s easy to discount one for the other. But having oily skin and having hydrated skin are two very different things, indeed.

Habits to Practice To Help Your Dry Eyes

*Be sure to remove your makeup each night before bed.

*Use gentle micellar water or oil-free and paraben-free removers to remove your makeup.

*The best eye makeup removers to use should be makeup removers without mineral oil, sodium lauryl sulfate, or Diazolidinyl urea.

*For stubborn makeup, consider using a gentle baby shampoo.

*Try using a lid scrub on your eyes.

What is A Moisturizer?

Now, looking at our old friend, the humble moisturizer. A moisturizer is a cosmetic product that is used to nourish and hydrate your skin. It helps to prevent dryness and keeps it soft and supple. I also feel that a good moisturizer keeps your skin barrier strong.

How to Use a Moisturizer

• start by cleansing your skin and patting it dry
• next, apply a small amount of moisturizer to your face and neck, using gentle upward, circular motions. Be careful to avoid your eye area.
• aim to use your moisturizer twice a day, both morning and at night, to keep your skin hydrated and healthy

When to Use a Moisturizer

As we mentioned, aim to use a facial moisturizer twice a day, in the morning and at night. This will keep your skin hydrated and healthy, and fresh as a daisy.

Of course, these aren’t hard and fast rules. And you should feel free to adjust how often you moisturize, depending on your skin type and where you are in the world. Of, and also what season it is, too.

What Are the Main Differences Between Serum and Moisturizer?

When you want to identify the main differences between a moisturizer and a serum, you simply need to look at both of their properties and aims.

Facial moisturizers hydrate and protect the skin’s surface.

While serums are formulated to deliver active ingredients deeper into the skin.

Typically, moisturizers have a thicker and creamier texture than serums. Serums tend to be lightweight and have a more fluid consistency.

Also, serums are more concentrated and often have a high concentration of active ingredients. And this makes them way more potent and powerful than moisturizers.

Moisturizers also contain ingredients to help keep hydration in your skin. Ingredients that we call occlusives; that help lock in hydration to your skin.

And without getting too sciency on you, serums are made of smaller molecules than moisturizers. And molecules are made from larger molecules than serums. And what this means to you is that in terms of layering your skincare, thinnest to thickest (on top) is a good rule of thumb, but it probably won’t be the end of the world when you mix it up.
So don’t spend too much time worrying about the molecules!

What Are the Similarities Between Serum and Moisturizer?

Facial moisturizers and serums are both skincare products that are designed to hydrate and nourish the skin. Additionally, they both help to improve the overall appearance and health of the skin. A: This all depends on your skin. And you knowing your skin. I can actually recall feeling a burning or tingling sensation from one or two serums over the years – and you know what? I just washed them off at that point. And eventually stopped using those products. If you experience anything more extreme, wash the serum off immediately and stop using it. Q: Can I Use One Without the Other?
A: You can use a serum without a moisturizer. And if you have naturally hydrated skin, this may be all you need. If you are drier, it’s probably best to use both. I must admit I still that I have never given it much thought that Olay offers these two different ranges – Regenerist and Total Effects. I think of Olay as one brand. Maybe you do too?

The History of Olay

You might remember being intrigued by that striking, Art Deco-inspired glass bottle of Oil of Olay on your mother or grandmother’s dresser? (Depending on your age, of course!)

Well, Olay began as Oil of Olay. And it was created in 1952 by a South African chemist named Graham Wulff. 

Wulff created the iconic baby pink fluid in the heavy glass bottle especially for his wife. This came to him as a counterpart to the heavy cream formulas of the day. 

I still remember growing up in Australia, and back then, it was called Oil of Ulan! I promise you! Any of my fellow Aussies remember?

Oil of Olay’s name is derived from one of its ingredients – lanolin. Yep, it’s literally Wulff’s wordplay of the letters of its key hydrating ingredient, lanolin. You learn something every day, right?

Originally, Oil of Olay was not marketed as a moisturizer, but more of a beauty fluid. A product that kept your skin moisture levels up, as is the case in younger skin. 

The original Oil of Olay formula included these prime ingredients. You may well know all about these already, but let’s take a little refresher course, shall we?

Lanolin

Lanolin is an emollient that heals and hydrates dry, dehydrated, and rough skin. Lanolin can be likened to human sebum (oil) and is sometimes called “wool fat”. Lanolin is not a humectant but it can hold twice its weight in water. The lanolin works by trapping water onto your skin once the skin is moist. This gives your skin the look of plumpness that we are all trying to attain.

Glycerin

Glycerin is a colorless, odorless humectant that helps to increase hydration. It also helps to heal skin and prevents moisture loss. And being that it’s super affordable, you’ll no doubt see it in a LOT of your skin care and makeup products once you start paying attention.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin that penetrates deep into the skin. It helps to promote collagen production, which can minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)

Niacinamide is a powerhouse vitamin compound that performs numerous skin care functions. Niacinamide (aka Vitamin B3) protects the skin from environmental stressors, including exposure to UV rays, pollution, and toxins. It increases keratin (skin protein) synthesis and helps rebuild damaged DNA in skin cells.

Niacinamide supports the production of ceramides (natural fats on the skin). It’s also anti-inflammatory so it’s ideal for calming acne flare-ups. Over time, dark spots, discoloration, and red blotchiness are diminished.

Amino Peptides

These are the building blocks for keratin and elastin. They help keep skin looking firm, smooth, tighter, brighter, and supple.

Total Effects – the Pros and Cons

Pros

• geared towards those among us in their late teens to mid-30s (in other words, those in the preventative category)
• makes use of proven antioxidants vitamin E and green tea
• affordable, multi-tasking skincare

Cons

• not intended for repair or restoration (in my opinion, anyone over 40)
• products may not be as efficacious as those in the Regenerist range – ie results may not be as dramatic or quick acting

Regenerist or Total Effects Alternatives?

In theory, you could spend $50, $60, $70+ for a moisturizer. But before investing in high-end formulas, I suggest you read the list of ingredients first.

Many times, you pay exactly for what high-end products tend to be: prestige packaging and brand names. A lot of times, if a prestige brand touts the latest ground-breaking ingredient, you’ll still end up paying for mostly water, fillers, and binders. And there are still many, many affordable moisturizing products for all budgets to be found.

Olay is less expensive, yes.

However, Olay’s ingredients (and not all at once) can be found in some prestigious, classic brand formulas, thus giving you similar results and, generally with a more affordable price tag.

Regenerist Vs Total Effects – The Verdict

So, the takeaways about what truly are the differences between the Regenerist vs. Total Effects line are. Drum roll, please!!!!

Regenerist = Repair and Restore (or R and R, as I like to remember it!)

Of course, that’s simplifying it somewhat.

Regenerist seems to be marketed at a more mature audience. Their price points tend to be a little higher, and their products offer prompt delivery of their promises.

Total Effects = Prevent and Protect (and this would stand for P & P! Easy!)

A more well-rounded multi-tasker is how I would sum up Total Effects (as the name suggests, as well). A lower price point certainly makes this line attractive to a younger buying audience that may well be investing in their first skincare products. Awe.

A Word to the Wise

I wanted to mention that in researching Egyptian Magic, I actually did small trials with numerous friends, colleagues, willing human lab rats.

And we did experience one individual in my group react to something in the cream.

Royal Jelly does seem to cause reactions in some people.

So as always, when trying new products, sample a small amount on your inner arm or wrist and note if there is any redness or reactions. Highly unlikely, but it has been documented, so is well worth mentioning.

And of course, if you react to anything you put on your skin, stop using it immediately!
