Then, once you’re all ready to leave for the function, selfies are posted, and one of your false lashes begins to come away from the center of your eyelid. You feel like a drag queen 2 days after her last performance, and nothing will keep that sucker down.

The upshot of it is, that you spend the whole evening pressing it down in the bathroom so it looks and less like you are cross-eyed, and you spare yourself from going outside in case the slightest gale will pull it from its weak latex-based foundations on the rest of your lid.

Ugh. Nightmare right? And if this isn’t a scenario you are familiar with yourself, then it’s definitely one you don’t want to wish on your dear client, actor, or bride-to-be. Not in a million years.

And that’s how this post was inspired.

Time to walk down the eyelash glue aisle and check out the best glue and strongest eyelash adhesives that will never cause you or anyone you stick a falsie on any such grief.

Now, I have to say, putting on false eyelashes is certainly not something I jump up and down with excitement about in a makeup application. However, the difference they can make is extraordinary, so I have kind of developed this love/strongly dislike relationship with them.

And the glue I have used for the last few years, I’m kind of retiring, mainly due to it leaving a kind of UV purple hue in the area it is applied to. It’s hard to explain – and I suspect if I did shine a blacklight on an area the glue was in, it would glow with all the intensity of your favorite glow-in-the-dark makeup. Just not the intended look for most beauty makeups, right?

So I have a slightly selfish motive with this post as well, as I, too am on the quest for the most reliable and best eyelash adhesives your money can buy!

Oh, and just to be clear – this is a post about glues for false eyelashes. This is not in any way related to eyelash extensions or processes involving eyelash extensions. Just wanted to be sure you were clear on the difference.

I might add. In researching all about lash glues, people are loyal to their brands. Seriously. I haven’t seen such staunch devotion to their best lash glue of choice in another product yet.

Tips for False Eyelash Application Success

Pre-Fit Your Lashes

Always pre-fit your false eyelash before gluing down. I like to use the little bit of latex that it comes on the lash band (to hold it in place) as this helps act as a temporary stick enough for me to fit the strip lash. Then I can determine whether it needs trimming or not.

Pre-Clean Your Lashes

Be sure to remove this latex before you glue down your strip lash though! It will only provide extra bulk (not extra adhesion!) and prevent your lash from sitting flush to the lash line.

Custom Trim Your Lashes to Size

Always trim from the outer edge of your false strip eyelash. This will ensure that you still have the natural blend in lash lengths at the inner end of the strip and create a more natural flow of lash lengths from the inside to the outer edge of the eye.

To Tweeze or Not To Tweeze

Some people like tweezers, and some people do not! Find what works for you and then run with it!

Be Organized

Pre-remove the lashes (individual or strip) from their packaging before y our client or performer sits down for their makeup. I like to pop them on the edge of my glass palette. All lined up and ready for when I get to the lashes. If using individual or clusters, I always prep more than I anticipate using, so if I drop one I have a quick replacement on hand. This can save many minutes while your person is in the chair and help speed up your makeup application time.

Find the Tools That Work For You

Another case of personal preference – some people love these little mini eyelash curlers. I have them, but honestly, I very rarely use them. I’m sure they will find their place in my regular routine, just not at the moment. Check them out here if you don’t have them – they may come in very handy and become a life-save for you, well, a lash-saver really!

Don’t Be Afraid to Use Your Scissors

If you have troubles applying full strip lashes, why not try cutting them up into smaller sections. Many makeup artists swear by this. And you can then work on developing a brick technique (where the small clusters overlap, like laying bricks) and even building depth where necessary.

Lash Remover 101

Always have your best oil-based lash remover on hand when using false eyelashes and glues. Some of these adhesives are incredibly strong. And the last thing you want your client dealing with at the end of the night is pulling out their own natural lashes when yanking their falsies out without a good makeup remover.

Tips for Preventing Smudging

Aside from choosing the right mascara to help you avoid the dreaded panda eyes, here’s what else you can do to stop your mascara from smudging.

Clean Your Lashes

Always begin with clean lids and lashes. You should never apply mascara to dirty lashes, as this increases your risk of the product falling as well as putting you at risk of an eye infection. Ouch!
Use a gentle makeup remover to remove all traces of makeup and dirt from your eyelashes and lids, all the way up to your eyebrows. You want the area to be squeaky clean before getting started.

Control Oiliness

Have you got oily eyelids? It’s more common than you might think. Since oil melts and dissolves the bonds in makeup, you’ll need to soak up any excess oil at the start of your makeup routine to guarantee long-lasting, smudge-free mascara.
After using a gentle cleanser, take a powder-laced blotting sheet and press it over your oily lids and under eyes to fully mattify them prior to makeup application. Setting powder also works wonders in preventing product slip. Even using a powder eyeshadow will contribute to controlling oily skin near your top lashes.

You can also use an eyeshadow primer to help contain those oily upper lids.

Otherwise known as the anagen phase, this lash growth phase can last between 4 and 10 weeks. Eyelashes generally grow between 0.12 and 0.14 millimeters each day.

The Degradation Phase

Also known as the catagen phase, this occurs when your eyelash stops growing and your hair follicles start to shrink.

The Resting Phase

You might also know this as the telogen phase – the final phase in which your eyelash falls out.

What Causes Eyelashes to Fall Out?

According to experts, eyelash loss can be caused by a number of common reasons. For starters, it could be your health. Losing more eyelashes than normal may point to underlying issues such as thyroid conditions, autoimmune, inflammatory, or oncological conditions.

Or on the other hand, it could be down to something as simple as daily stress. If you’re experiencing a surge in stress, you may experience something known as telogen effluvium, a type of hair loss related to stress.

That’s because stress causes more hairs to enter the resting phase of the eyelash growth cycle, which can leave your lashes looking much thinner.

Another way stress causes eyelash fall is because we tend to rub our eyes or face when we’re stressed – another contributor to hair loss.

If you’re noticing missing lashes, look for other symptoms like itching, swelling, or tenderness, which might indicate you have an eye infection. If this is the case, reach out to your healthcare provider as soon as possible to receive the appropriate treatment.

Factors That Affect the Lifespan of Your False Eyelashes 

There are many things that can affect the lifespan of your false eyelashes.

Bear in mind we are dealing with strip eyelashes here. Not so much individual false lashes (although I do love these a LOT!). You can try (and I wish you all the best), but we are primarily talking about re-using strip false eyelashes only.

Okay, let’s take a look at several of these factors in a little more depth.

The Material You False Eyelashes Are Made From

There are a lot of different types of false eyelashes out there. They come in two forms: natural and synthetic. These materials can include mink and many natural animal hairs, human hair, and horsehair. Synthetic can include faux mink, synthetic hairs, and artificial materials.

Synthetic lashes

These will last a shorter amount of time. With proper care between uses, you might only get four or five good uses out of them. On the other hand, natural lashes can last a lot longer. Sometimes up to 20 times or more.

Natural hair lashes

These are as realistic as they get in the world of false lashes because they replicate the natural eyelash. They are lighter, finer, and give a more natural finish. Mink, human, and horsehair are all-natural materials that will last so that you can use them again and again. They’ll also generally stay in better shape – so your lashes always look flawless!

Synthetic lashes range from cheap rubber types to silk and faux mink lashes. Plastic lashes can be heavy and of poorer quality. Silk and faux mink are synthetic and give a softer, natural, glossy look. If cleaned and stored properly, you can get several uses from them. However, this depends on the quality of the product you purchase.

I don’t know how I feel about using mink on my eyes (or anyone else’s, for that matter) anymore. The best synthetic lashes are so impressive nowadays that I feel there is definitely a reason to steer away from using animal hairs for our beauty enhancement. And obviously, quality counts. I truly feel you can discover some great quality synthetic lashes without sacrificing some little fluffy four-legged friends with a little research. More on that now!

Price and Quality Do Affect How Many Times You Can Reuse Your False Eyelashes

The cost of false eyelashes depends on the quality and material.
Natural lashes last longer, so they are worth the investment. Mink is the most expensive. Human and horse hair lashes are cheaper, but proper aftercare will make them last longer.

Synthetic lashes are more affordable, and as a result, they last a lot less time. You can get better and worse versions of synthetic lashes, so I recommend researching and reading reviews before making the final investment.

The Brand

The top-selling brands Ardell (these are my faves), MAC Cosmetics (these are great, too!), and Sephora (look at these) offer a vast selection of false eyelashes. MAC DIY Lash Sets start from around the $20 mark! Always choose a good, high-quality brand, as you’ll find these brands provide long-lasting false eyelashes.

Types of Glue

There are several different types of glue to stick on your false eyelashes. Strong adhesives that dry fast often contain ingredients requiring a particular solvent or a special false lash remover to re-use your lashes.
As a result, these may damage the fibers in the lashes, making them look a lot less dramatic in your second use.

Ideally, it’s always best to look for high-quality glue to apply your lashes to prevent them from getting damaged and becoming unusable. Again, please do your research to find the most recommended eyelash glue so you can use them again.

If you prefer a latex-based glue, there can only be one brand to use, and for me, that’s Duo Strip Eyelash Adhesive. Just wanted to mention it here. It’s like the Lash Glue of Champions for me!

You and Your Care

It is vital to take care of false lashes if you want to use them again. Ensuring falsies are clean, sanitized, and stored in a dry place will enable you to re-use them multiple times. If you’re not keeping them clean, you’ll quickly see a difference in how your falsies look and feel. And trust us, it won’t be good!

How to Increase the Longevity of Your Lashes

One of the first things to know is, re-using your false eyelashes is going to save you money. Plus, you are reusing and recycling – which is always a good thing. Who doesn’t want to leave a greener footprint?

Hence two good reasons to make that extra effort when removing them! Provided you incorporate a few changes, you can make false eyelashes last for a lot longer.

Apply Mascara to Your Own Real Lashes, Not Your False Lashes

Many people make the mistake of layering mascara onto their false lashes. Avoid this at all costs!

To apply false eyelashes, first, it is best to apply a thin coat of mascara to your own lashes. (Be sure to curl them with your favorite eyelash curler before applying your mascara!) Then allow the mascara to dry. This makes the false lashes fasten to your natural lashes. If mascara gets onto your false lashes, it is hard to remove, and you’ll need to rub hard to get rid of the residue. As a result, the falsies will go clumpy and will be unusable.

Handle with Care – Use Tweezers and Not Your Fingers

Applying fake eyelashes can be tricky and needs a lot of practice. Tweezers are the best tool to use for removing your lashes, as they’re more hygienic than your fingers and more precise at peeling away the lash. In other words, you won’t have to worry about accidentally damaging them.

False Eyelash Storage 

To re-use false lashes, make sure you store them properly.

Always place clean and dry falsies back in their half-moon trays – the trays you bought them in. Alternatively, try keeping them in a box with small compartments to preserve them from dirt, dust, and moisture, all of which can shorten their lifeline. Store the box in a cool, dry, and dark place – not the bathroom or direct sunlight!

Application and Removal of False Eyelashes 

If you have splashed out the cash on top-quality false lashes, you will want to use them again. The way to do this? Adopt the best application and removal methods.

Always apply your lashes using high-quality adhesive and tweezers to provide precise placement. If you need help, ask a friend. It’s better to ask for help than to risk wrecking your precious lashes and being unable to use them again.

It is also essential to remove your false lashes with care so you can re-use them several times. To do this:

• Use a cotton pad with an eye makeup remover (micellar water or an oil-free makeup remover maybe your best option for reusing lashes – oil-based remover tends to prevent the lashes from ever gluing down well again!)
• Place the soaked cotton pad over the closed eye
• Hold and repeat until the false lash loosens. This will help to remove any excess glue as well.
• Lift away the lash band with a pair of tweezers, or get under the lash band with a cotton swab. Be sure to do this gently. No ripping!
• Use warm water on a cotton ball to wipe away any excess glue and remover along the top of your lashes
• If you still have remaining glue, use this cult status eye makeup remover to solve all of your problems!

How to Care For Your False Eyelashes In Between Uses

To help prolong the life of your strip lashes, care between uses is essential. Cleaning and sanitizing will remove glue and old makeup, making them easier to apply the next time. It won’t just make your lashes last longer. It will also remove the risk of infection – something that happens if you don’t clean your falsies properly.

But it doesn’t end there. It is important to store them properly if you want to reuse your false eyelashes as much as possible. These processes need doing after every use.

As I mentioned, one of the best storage options for your false lashes is the half-moon trays you purchased them in.
Yes, after the cleaning procedure, it is best to put them back in the clean tray. Place the lash against the half-moon shape and cover. This will keep them in shape, clean, and dust-free for as long as possible.

Pro Tip – if you have a hard time getting the lash to hug the half-moon form and keep its natural curved shape, dot a little amount of latex-based lash adhesive on the half-moon form at the top edge where the lash band will sit. Please wait for it to dry a little, and then gently place the lash against it.
If you do this at the ends, it will be enough glue to hold the lashes on the form, and yet very minimal so you can pop the dried glue dot off before you reapply your flashes lashes.

False lashes are delicate, and it is essential to look after them if you want to use them repeatedly. Using proper storage will also protect them against dirt and moisture and stop bacteria from forming. An eye infection or a pink eye look is never a good look!
 
It is not always possible to re-use the packaging of false lashes. So, look out for supportive packaging, so lashes don’t get squashed or damaged when stored. You will need one with support and small compartments to prevent them from getting dusty or exposed to sunlight. This will also keep them organized and separate.

Hot, damp, and bright conditions are a no-go!

If exposed to moisture, bacteria can get into the lashes. This will lead to eye irritation and infections. So avoid damp bathrooms. Hot, moist, and sunny surroundings will cause the lashes to change shape. Keep in the appropriate storage, whether that’s a makeup box, drawer, or your half-moon trays.

Remember

 A little knowledge is good to have before you use false eyelashes. The most important point is cleanliness. 

Keeping your false lashes clean is vital to stop the spread of bacteria and germs getting into your eyes and on the skin. It is also crucial if you use your lashes more than once. Simply put, you can’t re-use dirty, false eyelashes. So keep them squeaky clean!

The main issue is the adhesive. Whether it is latex-based or latex-free adhesive, the glue can end up sticking to your skin. So to help stop this, here are some great tips on how to get eyelash glue off your skin!

False Eyelashes

False eyelashes or eyelash extensions are cosmetic products used to create length and provide curl, fullness, and thickness to the natural eyelash. They can also help create a more dramatic look with your eyes.

Since their creation in the early 1900s, false eyelashes have been made with many various materials. These include mink, silk, human hair, horsehair, and more up-to-date synthetic materials.

Eyelash extensions are available in three main types: Individual flare lashes, strip lashes, and single individual lashes. They attach to existing eyelashes with adhesives that are latex-based and latex-free-based.

False eyelashes give you an instant transformation in a beauty routine. But what happens when eyelash glue ends up on your skin? It’s a common issue – and luckily, not too difficult to fix.

Types of False Eyelash Removers

There are endless choices of false eyelash removers available to make it easy for you to remove them. But how do you know which type of remover to choose?

Most of the time, it depends on you, the individual.

Also, the remover you choose depends on which type of extension you use.

Strip lashes and traditional false eyelashes require a different approach than a remover for eyelash extensions. And in this post, we are focusing primarily on false eyelashes only and their adhesives.

The four removers available include cream, gel, solvent, oil-based removers, and also more natural removal processes.   

Cream Remover

-is a lotion with a soft creamy consistency. It is easy to apply and safe to use and doesn’t burn the eyes or skin as solvent removers can. The cream is safe to use with strip lashes.

Gel Remover

-also has a thick consistency and is easy to use on strip lashes. The majority of gel removers are oil-free.

Solvent remover is a liquid and applied on a cotton pad or cotton swab to the lash extension. Some solvent removers contain harsh chemicals such as glycol ether. So care is needed when using as they can irritate the eyes and skin. If you are unsure of solvent removers, book in with a professional lash technician.

Oil-Based Removers

-are available in different forms. Removers of this type can be mineral-oil-based and are sold in tubes with a small brush to apply to the lashes. Oil-based removers are not suitable for lash extensions, as it stops the glue from working when you want to use them again. Oil tends to spread and spread, so no matter how thoroughly you may clean your fake lashes, they may never adhere well again.

If you are on a budget or want a more natural approach, head to the kitchen!

Yes, that’s right, olive oil and coconut oil do the job too.

These are gentler removers and especially good for sensitive skin types. Coconut and olive oil are not for those who use strip eyelashes, as they stop the glue from working when re-using. But if you’re content with your falsies being a one-time show and happy to discard them after wearing them, these oils will be your answer.

How to Remove False Eyelashes

Getting rid of the glue left after removing false eyelashes can be challenging. It is tempting to pick and pull using a pair of tweezers, or some sharp instruments, but at all costs, avoid doing this! Here are four easy ways (and one not-so-easy way!) that are safe and work!
 

1.Eye Makeup Remover 

Use the correct type of eye makeup remover for false lashes. Oil-based eye makeup removers work best at removing the glue residue from the skin. It breaks down the ingredients in the glue that makes the lashes stick to the skin. A gentle makeup remover will dissolve the glue on the skin and your natural eyelashes. If you intend on using the strip lashes again, it is essential to use an oil-free makeup remover.

The first step is, to remove glue from the skin. Dip a cotton swab into the remover, and saturate it so it is not dripping. Run the swab along the eyelid, close to the lash band. Start from the outer corner and work your way into the center. Be careful not to get any in your eyes. Leave it to sit for a minute or two so that it loosens the glue from the skin and lets you pull it away with ease. If not, repeat the procedure. It can take a few minutes to dissolve the glue.

Finally, wipe the glue away with a soft, clean, damp cloth. Wash or cleanse your face and moisturize as normal! 

 2. Dissolving the Eyelash Glue With Oil

Oil breaks down the ingredients in the eyelash adhesive on the skin to help remove it. Plus, oils offer the advantage of moisturization.

Dab a cotton swab into your favorite oil (almond, baby oil, coconut, or extra virgin olive oil). Swipe the swab along the eyelid and wait for a few minutes. Leaving the oil sit for this time will help loosen the glue.

With a cotton ball or pad, wipe any surplus glue. Repeat this process until the adhesive goes away completely. When all the lash glue is gone, cleanse the entire face and moisturize as usual.

Tip – Only use this to remove excess glue from your skin. If you haven’t taken note, oil can prevent glue bonding again if you plan to re-use lash strips!

3. Steam 

Boil 3 – 4 cups of water and add to a heat-proof bowl. Drape a towel over your head, and place your face over the large bowl. Stay here for 2-3 minutes so that the heat has a chance to loosen the glue from your skin.
Afterward, it should then be easy to wipe away the glue with a soft, cotton towel.

Think of this as an added steam treatment for your face! And a great way to get eyelash glue off your skin without using any additional materials or products.

4. The Hot Towel

While we are looking at heat treatments, I wanted to mention the BEST beauty treatment of all. There is a belief that it can only occur while on a flight and up the pointy end of the plane, or when you get a facial.

But a simple and luxurious hot towel is something you can do at home, provided you own a microwave (that’s clean!) and some clean face cloths or a clean towel.

Soak the towel in water and roll it up and place it into a Ziploc bag. Pop it in the microwave for 2-3 minutes. Remove by holding the bag, as it may be scalding and steamy.

Then press gently onto your eyes when the temperature feels more like lukewarm water and is safe to put close to your eyes (you can test it on your inner wrist first)

Leave it there till it cools, and then you should be able to remove the glue by wiping it away with the towel.

And you get the bonus of a lovely hot towel treatment!

5. The Not-So-Easy Way

I felt compelled to mention this. I’ve seen people do this time, and time again. And some of us probably WILL continue to do this.

You can always just tear ’em off. Well, pick off the glue is what I mean.

(Did anyone detect my sarcasm there?) The worst thing about this approach, first of all, is you risk pulling out your own lashes. Seriously. And none of us want even fewer lashes than we already have, do we? I mean, isn’t that at least some of the point of wearing falsies? To create the illusion of having full natural lashes?

The best way to help age your eyes prematurely is by stretching the thin and delicate skin of your eyelid when you tear off the false eyelashes, so don’t do it!

When all is said and done, remember to clean your natural lashes and eyelids once the false eyelashes and residual glue have been removed. Not only will this ensure you will remove all left-over glue on and around your lashes, but more importantly, this will also help prevent eye infections or any irritations to your eyes or your real lashes.

You must take the time and spend proper care on your eyes before, during, and after wearing false lashes. They are your eyes, after all. And aside from looking great, you need to look after them!

My favorite pick for eyelash cleansing is Lashify Melt Away.

Lashify’s Melt Away removes eyelash glue easily from the delicate skin around the eye area. It contains papaya fruit extract and orange fruit extract, which help moisturize and strengthen the lashes.

Another strong false eyelash remover is Ardell Lash Free Eyelash Adhesive Remover. It will make light work by eliminating any glue left on the skin. Once applied, it works efficiently. As with all of these products – be careful when using on your eyes, but this will definitely do the trick!

Cleaning Eyelashes after Removal 

It is essential to keep your eyelash strips clean and damage-free. Doing so will not only keep them in tip-top condition but will aid in prolonging their lifespan.

Start by removing any leftover glue by grabbing a tweezer and pulling off any glue still on the band. Then dip a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol or an oil-free makeup remover and wipe down the strip.

Keeping them clean means they will stick on easily next time and every time you use them. Any dirt will stop the glue from working. Plus, you still want them to look as good as the first time you wore them!

You can clean them by sanitizing the false eyelash strip with rubbing alcohol on a cotton pad.

Storing False Eyelashes in Between Uses

Storing false lashes with care will help to preserve them so that they last as long as possible. To do this, you will need half-moon trays.

False lashes usually come in half moon trays when you buy them. Placing them back in there will help keep them in shape.

Pro Tip: If your strip lashes don’t keep their shape well after their debut, a good tip to remember is simple, cut them up! They will easily transform into minis or individuals if you trim them up carefully. Recycle, I say!

You can even use your eyelash curler to give these re-purposed individuals a little pep if they lose their natural curl over time.

Just make sure the lashes are clean and dry before placing them back in the trays – and the trays, too!

According to Vanessa Scali (Anna Kendrick and Christina Hendrick’s makeup artist), the Shiseido eyelash curler’s solid design “hits the ‘Goldilocks’ zone for firmness and roundness – it can curl even the smallest of lashes!”
