Concealer is a makeup product that you can use to cover, conceal, and camouflage spots, scratches, shadows or blemishes on the skin. A concealer tends to be available in a flesh-toned shade. And depending on where on the face or body you are going to apply it, it either matches the skin tone, or is a slightly lighter shade (particularly in fashion under the eye area) than the skin tone of the makeup wearer.

Why use a Concealer?

In a nutshell, concealing helps foundation with the task of evening out your skin tone, right? But it does so much more than that.

So why do we conceal?

To cover blemishes, scratches, scars, any marks on the skin that you might not like to share with the world on a daily basis.

If you are using concealer to cover acne, try looking for one that contains salicylic acid, as this will help work on the acne at the same time as keeping it covered.

We can use concealer to cover dark shadows under your eyes – when you’re tired, stressed or dehydrated and you want to brighten your eyes a little. A concealer can work wonders.

Basically, we want to look and feel better about ourselves – and our clients/models/actors.

How To Use a Concealer Correctly

To answer this question, it makes sense to go back a step in the makeup application process.

I don’t know about you, but that means that concealing starts with the foundation application.

Personally, at least 3/4 of the time, I start with the foundation when applying makeup. If the look has a heavy or dramatic eye look, I might start with the eye, but more often than not, I start with the foundation.

I might add, for the sake of this post, we’re not discussing skin prep or any skincare steps you want to include in your routine here. This is strictly laser-focused on concealing as I want to keep our eyes on the road. Hope that makes sense! We can take skin prep another day

How to Conceal:

1. Apply your foundation over the face. This will help lighten the load of your concealer, as it will cover any light blemishes or discolorations in the process. So if you think of each makeup step as helping the next step, you can love your foundation a little bit more for how much it achieves!
2. Next, apply your concealer to the areas that need it. I like to use a small concealer brush – that way, I can pinpoint and apply accurately exactly where the concealer product is going. This is advantageous for many reasons: I don’t waste product, I’m time efficient, and I’m clean with my application. Win-win.
3. Once I have applied the concealer to the targetted area, I use a clean brush to blend it out and into the foundation – and like magic, it disappears (that was in my magician’s voice….)

If you’re concealing your own face, you may feel more comfortable using your fingers. And that’s fine. Just make sure they are clean, and try to stick to using your fourth finger. You will have a lighter touch with it than, say, your pointer finger, and the warmth of your finger will help blend and move the concealer product beautifully, too.

And that’s the reader’s digest version of how I like to conceal a spot or scar on the face.

Types of Concealers

Like all of our beloved makeup products, there’s an abundance of choices when it comes to concealers.

And the type you use is dependent on the skin type it’s going on. For example, the concealer I would use on a 21-year-old with flawless, plump skin (not envious at all!) may be different from the concealer I use on a 65-year-old.

Concealers are available as liquids, creams, creamier “pen” products with a button to push the product out, sticks, and even a powder color-correcting concealer.

Liquid Concealer

Generally speaking, liquid concealers can be lighter in coverage and rely on reflective qualities as opposed to high-pigment and heavy coverage. They feel lighter on the skin and may be better options if your skin is dry or textured.

Amazing Cosmetics Concealer

I’ve only recently become aware of this amazing concealer, and how grateful am I that I did? While the lighter concealer shades can run a tad ashy, this lovely concealer blends out nicely and finely and conceals dark shadows like a champion.

This Maybelline baby has some staying power for a liquid concealer and packs a punch in the pigment department. This is a dream product that is long-lasting and without getting all up in your creases or fine lines. It’s almost too good to be so affordable.

While this is a rather obvious nod to the MAC Concealer Palettes I love so much and rely on at work. There is definitely a place in the market for the NYX Conceal Correct palettes. These creams are blendable and while they may not have the pigment power of a MAC cream or let’s say the Maqpro creams, they will still help you get the concealing done, and with a couple of correcting options (a peach color corrector and a yellow color corrector) inside each palette, it s a great starter kit for someone that may be new to the concept of color correcting.

What is Corrector?

In makeup, a corrector is a product that uses the principles of color theory to neutralize the actual color of the skin to match and blend in with your all-over skin tone.

For example, a green neutralizer will even out redness or a red pimple. Or you can use an orange corrector to soften under eye dark circles (that can have a blue tone).

You could also classify a corrector as a red-based product that you use as a first step to cover tattoos.

In a nutshell, a corrector is any product that corrects discoloration in the skin using the opposite shade of the discoloration to do so.

The Color Wheel

So we couldn’t really discuss correcting in makeup without a gentle nod to our old pal, the color wheel.

And if you’re still avoiding understanding or just generally acknowledging the existence of color theory and the principles of the color wheel, PLEASE DO! It’s not that hard once you understand the basics. And you can learn those basics right here.

The very concept of correcting IS color theory, really. So you probably already know more than you’re giving yourself credit for, and if you use any green, purple, orange, yellow, or red complexion colors, chances are, you are applying the principles of color theory already.

Why use a Corrector?

That’s a very good question.

And the answer is, to create the illusion of even skin tone with light and color.

One of my very first movie experiences (back in the dawn of time – the 1990s) I worked on 100’s of pale, bald characters. First, we would shave their heads, and once that was complete, we would apply a green neutralizer all over their scalps to help take out any warmth in the skin.

And then, finally, a pale cream base was applied all over their head and powdered.

And that, my friend, was my very own introduction to correcting. On the job. Best way to learn, right?

How to Use a Corrector

Unlike a concealer, a corrector is most beneficial if applied before your foundation.

This is because it’s main task is correcting discoloration on the skin. Essentially, bring the area in question to an equal playing ground with the rest of the face.

So by correcting (or neutralizing) the targetted area first, when you go to apply your foundation shade to your face, the area you have corrected will appear the same shade and tone as the rest of your skin.

Does that make sense?

It’s basically color theory in practice and kind of magical. And once you grasp it, you won’t ungrasp it.

So if you have dark blueish circles under your eyes, you will want an orange to peach-based corrector if you have fair skin.

If you have dark blueish or purple-ish circles under your eyes and you have a darker skin tone, you will want a red-toned corrector to neutralize the dark circles.

And the same principles apply whether you are combatting melasma or hyper-pigmentation, acne or red spots, or redness.

I like to apply the corrector to my own face with my finger. The warmth of my finger helps blend the product really well, and seems to work better than a brush.

If I am applying corrector to someone else, I always use a small makeup brush to get the product on, and then a fresh brush to blend it.

When applying a corrector, you’ll see that some of the work is done instantly. But the magic doesn’t truly happen until your foundation goes over it and you have your even skin tone once again.

So, the steps are:

1. Identify the correcting you want to achieve.
2. Select your correcting makeup.
3. Apply your corrector to the targetted area you are looking to neutralize.
4. Blend out the corrector so just a fine layer remains and it blends out perfectly into the surrounding skin.
5. Continue with your complexion makeup – your foundation and concealer (if you need it). The foundation should seamlessly cover the corrector you have just applied.

Types of Correctors

Creams and liquid colour correctors are by far the most popular. Depending on the skin type you are working with, of course, you’ll determine the best formulation for the skin type.

If you have very dry skin, I would recommend a liquid over a cream, as a cream product can be drier and heavier and end up emphasizing any dryness or skin flaking as opposed to covering and making your skin look flawless.

Ben Nye Corrector Wheel

The Ben Nye name is such a well-respected name in the theatrical industry. And this color corrector wheel is the perfect entry-level compact if the color wheel is entirely new to you.

And if you’re still wondering how to use a green or a purple cream on your face, check out my introduction to color theory in makeup. It will definitely help you understand what color theory is, and literally what a color wheel is too.

This particular palette will be applied to light skin tones, although the orange and olive tones will also work nicely on medium to darker skin tones for corrective work.

Maqpror Fard Creme Palette Corrector

Another great starter kit for the concealing and correcting beginner. LA Girl provide us with a very staple orange, green and yellow color correcting combo that can take care of all manner of discolorations and scars on our faces.

These creams will be most effective on the light-to-medium skin shades, and the orange would also work for medium to darker skin tones.

This is a long-time classic correcting palette from Stila.

Nyx Color Correcting Powder

While these powders may look a bit scary to you, they are really not.

And while the banana shade is obviously the most popular by far (thanks Kim Kardashian for bringing banana powder to the masses!) the green color corrector and lavender color corrector options are great. NYX suggests you can use them before or after your foundation application to help cancel out redness (green) and sallowness (lavender).

Do I Need a Concealer If I use a Corrector?

Technically yes. And no.

Let’s go over it.

If you have particularly dramatic dark blue/brown circles under your eyes, you may rely on a very strong orange-based corrector as the first step of your makeup application. You may then follow this with a concealer, and then your foundation.

OR

You may use your orange-based corrector and go straight into you foundation next. It’s entirely up to you.

On the other hand, you may have a very faint scar that you only conceal each day. And perhaps you apply your foundation first, and then, if you need to, you add some of your concealer over the top, and that’s it.

There are no hard and fast rules, so experiment, and don’t be afraid to try different things and different process, techniques and products.

At the end of the day, concealers and correctors are very different products with different functions. And at the end of the day, if you feel great, who cares what your approach is?

So, whe it comes to the concealer vs corrector debate, well, it’s entirel up to you. So go and find your makeup flow.

Like you, and probably every makeup artist you know, I’ve gone through waves with MAC makeup over the years – I have some absolute favorite must-haves, and then there are certain lines that I have veered away from, only to revisit again quite recently. Studio Fix 24hr Smoothwear Concealer

This is MAC’s most lightweight, liquid offering for all of your concealing needs. It is available in 34 shades and provides lightweight, buildable coverage. Will stay on all day. Literally – 24 hours.

This lightweight fluid concealer is sweat, water, and humidity-resistant. And despite being oil-free and smoothing, it is your best choice for a dewier finish from MAC’s concealers and is great for all skin types.

It features a little doe foot applicator, so would be best to use it at home on yourself. Not so great in a day-checking kit, or your general makeup kit. But decanting can always be a good option if this is the right concealer for the job.

Pro Longwear Concealer

I couldn’t find my Pro Longwears, so apologies for the above photo. Not entirely unrelated, I mean, it’s got the word MAC in it, right?

I suspect this is MAC’s best-seller when it comes to concealing, known as something of a holy grail concealer. If you can confirm or deny it, let me know in the comments below!

Available in 16 shades, this is your full coverage concealer. The Pro longwear concealer has a natural matte finish and is a 24-hr working concealer. You know, for those extra long days!

All in a small glass bottle of concealing goodness that will no doubt give you a flawless finish.

Your Mac Pro Longwear concealer is long-lasting, non-creasing in fine lines, humidity, transfer, and sweat-resistant. It’s also ophthalmologist and dermatologist-tested, non-acnegenic, and fragrance-free. Phew!

The Pro Longwear concealer has a pump dispenser, and this may be where this product has its (tiny) downfall.

The online community is in agreement – you only need a small amount of product – just a little bit will do the job. And there is much discussion about how just one pump of this product releases a lot of product – way more product than you need to conceal one set of eyes or just a few dark spots on your face. Studio Fix Conceal and Correct Palette

And my favorite – the ever-reliable, always-on-hand, Conceal and Correct Palette. I love these palettes. They look great, and come in a range of shades for all concealing and correcting needs. They are great concealers to have in your set kit as well. They’re almost as pretty as some of my other, very favorite concealer palettes of a very different nature.

(Bonus points if you noticed my Rebbe Mat in the background of my pic above, too!)

These are palettes each containing 4 concealers and 2 correctors within each different shade. Perfect for correcting and concealing dark circles, under-eye pigmentation, and any discoloration you wish to conceal and correct.

If you work with me, chances are you’ll see the odd one of these 5 palettes on my station or in my hand at any one time. They’re just so reliable and conveniently sized, as I’ve mentioned.

Plus I do enjoy the benefits of working out of palettes more than single packages, for so many reasons.

Note that if you’re planning on using this on someone with dry skin, be sure to moisturize and prep their skin beforehand. And a good eye cream and moisturizer will have the skin ready for this cream concealer to work its magic. 

I do love these palettes. And if you haven’t worked out already, this is definitely a favorite concealer of mine. It’s just a great product that I can always rely on. Amazing coverage, sleek and compact packaging, easy to work from, and definitely one of my favorite MAC products.

And that’s my look at MAC Concealers for now. I have to say, it’s nice to see such a large brand keep it simple with just 3 different product options. And there is definitely a feeling of overwhelm that can happen with so much product folding on the market.

So to keep it as simple and accessible as this, MAC gets my vote.

I hate to be showing my age here if I kick and scream a little. But ladies and gents, PLEASE DONT DO THIS!

There are plenty of makeup products and materials that aren’t going to burn your eyes or leave you with such permanence as the dreaded bleaching will. Or that brassy/orange tone that happens to almost all chemically lightened hair.

So please consider using a concealer or makeup product for your eyebrows before you commit to the semi-permanence of a bleached brow.

I mean, what will be next, the eyebrow regrowth look?

It’s probably already happened, and I haven’t caught on yet!!!!

Defining the Role of the Brow Concealer

So basically, what can be the most fun about these techniques is that you can clean them off at the end of the day, and go back to your usual self.

And concealing your brows (as opposed to covering your brows) can be a temporary and entirely non-committal way to change your look for a day. Change the shape of your eyebrows. Or for example, create different era or time period looks, without actually changing anything about your own brows, their shape, thickness, length. Nothing.

How to Successfully Conceal Your Brows

Use the right shade

Obviously, when discussing the concept of concealing in makeup, the tendency is to go for a product that is lighter than your own (or the person you are making up) skin tone.

It’s worth noting that you need to keep in mind my old faithful color wheel when it comes to depositing light products into hair.

If you put a light skin-toned product into your eyebrows, and you have very dark eyebrows, guess what? They are going to look grey.

This is because the cool undertone of your eyebrow hairs will turn grey with a lighter concealer applied to them. The way to counteract this grey look is to use an orange-based product (if your brow hairs are on the bluer-toned side) or yellow if your hairs are more on the red/purple-toned side) to neutralize the hairs when lightened.

If you’re brand new to all of this, it can sound crazy, but it’s not. And if you still can’t work out the undertone of the eyebrow hair, go ahead and try a concealer of your choice. And see what the effects of it are.

It may well take a bit of playing around with to master.

Or perhaps you may even need to use an orange or yellow-based corrector PRIOR to using your concealer to create this look. Have a play and find out what works.

This is strictly a color-correcting palette, so you can really neutralize those undertones and conceal your brows to perfection. Dermaflage makes heavy-duty corrective products if ever I’ve seen them, so you know your brows will be covered with this little corrective palette.

If you have dry skin, be sure to thoroughly moisturize before use, as this is a waxy, cream based product.

I do like the simplicity of the correcting tones of this palette – that it very simply contains your orange, yellow, and green concealer for all of your needs. All in one palette.

L’Oreal Brow Stylist Brow Raiser

This version of the brow concealer from L’Oreal features a matt end and a shimmer end of the pencil. This is quite interesting as you could really play up the drama of your highlighted brow shape with this pencil. Another affordable option, the pencil comes with subtle orange/apricot undertones to help make light work of your correcting.

RMS is very quickly becoming a favorite clean brand of mine. And their infamous “Un” Cover Up is no exception. Jones Road The Brow Pencil in Blonde

Jones Road describes this pencil as “more brow with less work” which I really responded to! Although this is actually part of a range of eyebrow pencils, the blonde pencil in the range caught my eye and I felt worthy of mentioning here.

This is like those ball-point pens that were revolutionary when they came out in the 80’s with the four-color pen options. I’m intrigued by the endless possibilities this pencil offers with four tones in one.

You could work wonders with sculpting and shaping the brows with this, all at a rather fast-pace.

What Is a Primer?

A primer is a product that is specifically designed to create a blank, working canvas for you. In the case of makeup, obviously, I’m referring to priming your skin’s surface for makeup. Makeup primers can be categorized into further sections such as face primers, eye primers, lash primers, lip primers, and so on.

Face Primer

Face primer is used to prepare the skin for foundation, concealer, and powders. It should be applied before any makeup to help it stay on longer and improve its overall aesthetic.

Using a primer can minimize visible pores, improve skin texture, and create a nice smooth base for applying your foundation and other makeup. It can even make fine lines and wrinkles look less noticeable. Essentially, primer is what helps your makeup look better and last longer.

Bear in mind, that using a primer is also essentially adding product to your skin as well. (Can you tell I’m not a fan?)

Well, I guess I should follow that by saying that for me at work, I tend to use face primers very rarely. Sure, they have their place, but more often than not, I’m making up people to be filmed in front of cameras that take in more information than our eyes do. So for me, it’s about good skincare, good skin prep, and keeping looks and products on the skin to a minimum most of the time.

Particularly men. More often than not, we make up men to look like they are not wearing makeup, so less is more. Does that make sense? I hope so, I know I can tend to ramble some times!

Having said that, every single day is different and you may have to create a heavily made-up look or have to make up someone with skin that does require some textural help. But in general terms, I don’t really use primers.

Eyelid Primer

Eyelid primer is practically the same thing, only it’s designed specifically to help the makeup on your eye area look smoother and last longer.

If you want your mascara, eyeliner, and eye makeup to look great all day long without fallout, applying a thin layer of primer on your eyelids can get the job done. Because who doesn’t want day-long doll eyes without needing to keep reapplying on your bathroom breaks?

And yes, I LOVE eye primers!

How to Apply Your Primer

The purpose of your makeup primer is to set the base for foundation and other makeup to come. It should be applied after your final skincare step and prior to all of your makeup products.

• Using your fingers, apply a dime size amount to your skin, spreading it lightly and sparingly. You may think more means improved longevity, but it doesn’t. In fact, overapplying it can cause product to gather – the quickest way to ruin your look. If you have extremely dry skin, you can increase the amount
• You can also apply primer with a makeup brush, but it can tend to drag the primer around rather than blend it in, so find your groove with what works for you
• Give it a full minute to dry before going in with your foundation

Laura Mercier Eye Basics Primer

This is quite an interesting eye primer makeup product. You can use it as a stand alone base on your eyelids, and also as a traditional eyeprimer to set the tone for your eye makeup.

Two colors (Peach and Eyebright) are recommended for correcting work on your lids – if you are looking to cover a lot of purple or redness, go for Eyebright. For sallow lids or dull skin that you want to brighten, go for Peach.

What Is Concealer?

Well, that’s kind of a stupid question, really. I think we all know what a concealer IS. But let’s just walk through it anyway.

Concealer is a product that conceals imperfections on the skin, such as dark under-eye circles, blemishes, and red spots. Unlike primer, concealer should be applied after your foundation. Although some people do apply them before foundation. Still, they should be applied after primer, not before.

There are many different types of concealers to choose from, each with its own set of benefits. These include liquid concealer, stick concealer, cream concealer, and balm concealer.

What Concealer is Best for Your Skin Type?

Dry Skin

If you have dry, flaky skin, you’re best off with a liquid concealer as it glides on smoothly and blends well without leaving flakes behind. Some people think cream concealers work best because they have the word “cream” in them. However, because you have to rub them in, they can often bring out dry, flaky skin and make it appear more evident. If you are particularly dry in the under-eye area, be sure to use an eye cream prior to applying your under-eye concealer.

Oily Skin

Balm concealers work best for oily skin types as they don’t contain oil, so they won’t clog your pores or make you look extra shiny. Oily skin should avoid cream and stick concealers as these tend to clog the pores and trigger breakouts. They also magnify the appearance of pores and shine.

Uneven Skin

If your aim is to cover up discoloration, opt for a medium to full coverage concealer. Discoloration can be tough to cover up, so it’s important to choose one with a decent coverage that will actually mask it.

Choose a balm concealer that easily blends and layers for a smooth finish. And make sure you choose the right hue for color correction. Green neutralizes redness while lavender hides yellow tones.

Stick concealers are another excellent choice for color correction and blend in well for a natural finish.

Dark Circles

Cream concealer is perfect for hiding dark circles or hyperpigmentation. However, the best choice for diminishing dark circles under the eyes has got to be balm concealer.

If dark circles are your issue, choose peach, yellow, or orange hues as these all neutralize blue and purple shadows on the skin. Build the coverage by reapplying the concealer. You can also follow up with another layer of concealer that’s one shade lighter than your skin to avoid any white circles appearing around the eyes.

Aging Skin

With aging skin, you want to avoid concealers prone to creasing as they’ll make your fine lines look more noticeable. Your best choice would be liquid concealer as this offers the most hydration and won’t crease in your creases.

How To Apply Concealer

Now that you know what types of concealers are available on the market, it’s worth getting to know how to use them properly. Once you know how to use it right, the end result will look fantastic. It doesn’t matter which concealer you are using, the application stays the same.

• Start by prepping the skin with a moisturizer and primer. You can choose from one of the ones I’ve mentioned above if you wish. If you have oily skin, stick to a non-greasy, lightweight moisturizer that won’t elevate your shine. Use something more hydrating if you have dry or aging skin.
• Continue by applying your foundation, blending it in well for a nice, natural finish. Make sure you choose a foundation suitable for your skin type for the best possible result. If you are using a powder foundation, apply the concealer beforehand to avoid looking patchy.
• Now, it’s time to apply the concealer. Using a small amount, dab it on your problem areas using your fingers, brush, or sponge. Blend it in until you can no longer see the blemish.
• If the blemish or discoloration is still visible, follow up with a second round of application. Always use thin layers of concealer to prevent it from looking cakey.
• Are you using your finger? Use your ring finger to dab and blend it in. Applying too much pressure can cause fine lines and wrinkles.
• Set your concealer with a dusting of translucent powder.
• If you are using concealer under the eye, use a highlighter or radiant finish concealer to disguise shadowed areas.

Do I Need Both a Primer and A Concealer?

My honest answer is twofold. I think this ultimately depends on these two things:

• the condition of your skin
• the makeup look you are trying to achieve

Primer can help set the base for makeup to come, smoothing out imperfections, improving texture, and increasing makeup longevity.

However, and for me, that’s a BIG however……I do feel that if your skincare and skin prep are both on point, I really feel that primer has no place. But this is just me.

Concealer masks imperfections like breakouts, dark circles, and discoloration for an overall flawless look for your makeup. And honestly, concealer is a much more used and needed makeup product for me.

If you want beautiful, long-lasting makeup, sure, go ahead and use a little primer on your face.
Of course, if you’re lucky enough to have zero blemishes on your skin, you can just get away with using a little foundation, or even a tinted moisturizer. And if you’re in a rush, dabbing a little concealer beneath your eyes should save you for at least an hour or two.

Some people only use primer and nothing else if their only goal is to minimize their pores – which some primers are specifically designed to do.

It’s not absolutely vital to use both a primer and a concealer in your makeup routine, but if you want to hide imperfections and avoid watching your makeup disappear throughout the day, you’re best off using them both.

When it comes to the primer vs concealer debate, I’d have to say that they are both worth keeping in your purse. The right primer just like the right concealer can be your secret beauty weapon for flawless, radiant skin if that’s your thing. For me, an eye primer is a way more used product in my kit.

While primer sets your skin for long-lasting makeup that looks natural and even, concealer helps you look wide awake on just five hours of sleep and can quickly obscure that red, angry zit that just arrived on your chin.
For flawless makeup application or a particularly makeuppy look, use primer and concealer every time!

I remember the first time this palette was recommended to me by another makeup artist. It was almost 10 years ago now. And although it took me a minute to wrap my head around it – to understand how to use it properly, I’m so glad that I gave this palette a try all those years ago.

Dare I say that this corrector palette would belong in my “desert island” makeup mix. If it came down to a limited amount of makeup products to have on hand, this would be one of them. No questions asked. It’s just that good.

The palette itself is described as a mineral corrector.

But it also conceals, tones down redness, it can be used as a foundation, great on hands (you know those emergencies you find yourself in when you’re on set and your actor has a cut or a bruise on their hand, this will fix it instantly!)

I tend to think of this palette as an all-rounder concealer.

The Colorescience Mineral Corrector Palette is made from minerals, and the colors are presented in powder form. And that’s where it differs from almost any and every other concealer palette on the market today.

Let’s go from left to right as we walk through the 5 shades the palette holds. And explore further what exactly each shade is capable of.

Shade #1

Lightens Red Tones/Ideal for Concealing

This is the lightest shade of the Colorescience Mineral Corrector Palette. It’s also found on the far left side.

Perfect for a subtle highlight, or if you need a kick of light to bounce off a certain area.

This color is also great for concealing redness in fair-skin tones, covering pimples and acne and redness in general.

Be aware that this color is incredibly fair. So if you apply it on someone a little darker in skin tone, you may have the exact opposite effect to what you desire. And instead of a little blemish disappearing altogether, you may highlight it instead.

So be sure to know your colors well, and if in doubt, try something darker to begin with.

The beauty of these products is you can always go back and add more if you need to.

Shade #2

Corrects Red Tones/Ideal for Concealing

A true red color corrector is Shade #2. Its tone is a little deeper than #1 and is probably one of the colors I use most frequently in the palette.

If you have an actor on set that has red ears (this is a pet hate of mine!).

A little warmth is fine, but if they are red to the point of distraction, then this will be your new lifesaver. The easiest solution is to brush a little #2 on over the area in question. Those red ears will be toned down and ready for filming instantly!

This is also great to dot around red nostrils or on eyelids in general, where redness is an issue.

Despite though the color of this product being very warm in appearance, and knowing that all our color theory tells us that green will cancel out red, don’t be alarmed. Colorescience knows what they are doing and this color will undeniably take care of red issues you may come across.

Shade #3

Covers Blue Tones/Ideal for Concealing

As you can see by its appearance, Shade #3 has a little more of a peachy, orange tone to it than #1 and #2.

This is what you’ll use to tone down any under-eye blue tones or dark circles that you may have to contend with.

Let’s not forget that shade #3 is perfect for quickly covering any bruises as well.

Shade #4

Covers Blue Tones/Ideal for Concealing

A slightly deeper tone again, than Shade #3, this is another great concealer for bruising, under eye blueness, and any dark spots that you will have to cover.

Colorscience mentions on their site that these blue-tone cover colors are also perfect to use covering post-surgery bruising. I thought that was interesting that they mention this.

Covers Yellow and Green Tones/Ideal for Concealing

This is a deceptive color indeed. Its pigment is actually quite vivid and yes, it will neutralize any yellow or green tones you come across.

Whether it be doing your own, or someone else’s makeup, this is an unsung hero to cover colors we don’t often talk about.

Perhaps it’s because it’s not as common to have to conceal yellow and green tones within the skin, but it does happen.

This color is also great to mix with the others to get the perfect tone you are looking for.

Mixing The Colors

And while we’re at it, let’s talk mixing a little bit more.

Working as a makeup artist, I find myself drawn to makeup palettes way more frequently than to single color products.

There is a feeling of freedom and somewhat greater versatility that comes from having a palette of different colors in front of you. It’s hard to define, but there it is; I love a good palette!

So even if you have some heavy redness to contend with, feel free to have a play, and mix some of the deeper shades – you may just get your desired color and effect.

A Makeup Artist’s Must-Have Palette

As I have mentioned once or twice already, this palette is truly a must-have for the working makeup artist.

First of all, because it doesn’t read very heavily, and tones redness with ease. Generally I find that a majority of the makeup application I do on men is indeed, toning down red. And thanks to Colorescience, this is easy, quick and long-lasting.

It’s difficult to describe, but the finish of these powder products has an ever so slight reflect to them, and on the skin, they look so good, not shimmery at all. But just enough to bounce off light perfectly.

Let’s also not ignore the packaging.

I love the presentation of the Colorescience Mineral Corrector Palette. Finished in a compact, slim and clean-looking silver palette, it’s slim but solid.

It comes ready to use with its own small brush, which is like a short-handled concealer brush. The brush is of good quality, and I like to leave it in there.

Generally, I always take the makeup brushes out of the palettes they come with. But with my Colorescience palettes, I leave them in. Ready for use.

These little brushes are designed well for the task at hand. When I pop one of these palettes into my actor bag, I know it’s ready for quick touch-ups or corrections on set, with a brush ready to go.

These palettes are also perfect for personal use. Because they are so slim, they easily fit into a handbag or pocket.

In fact, if there is one gripe that I have about the palette, it is the fact that when I first started buying and using them, there was also a dark skin palette.

Currently, there is only one skin tone range in the Mineral Corrector Palette.

Surely it would be advantageous for both customers and businesses alike to revisit some more color ranges in the future. And I hope we see this eventuate.

Admittedly, I only discovered this was a thing right before the product launch in January of this year. Needless to say, I was compelled to jump straight on the Ordinary bandwagon.

I bought a handful of colors within my color range.

My curiosity was just too great to let the opportunity of a brand new Ordinary Colour product slip through the cracks.

And now that a little time has passed, I must say, I’m pleasantly surprised.

The Ordinary Colour Range

Keeping in step with the ranges of both Serum and Coverage Foundation Ranges, The Ordinary Concealer is also presented in the same color categorization.

For those unfamiliar few among us, The Ordinary lineup consists of a simple labelling system that starts with the numbers 1 – 4.

Products numbered 1 being the lightest and 4 being the darkest. The second digit then categorizes the color further in ranking of lightness from 0 – 4.

For example 1.0 is going to be lighter than 1.3.

And then, the final means of categorising comes in the form of letters. So within each number, the letters signify the tone of each product. By means of the letters Y, P, N, R or S.

• Y is for Yellow
• P is for Pink (in shades 1, 2 and 3)
• N is for Neutral
• R is for Red (in shades 3 and 4)
• S is for Silver

And now you know your Ordinary A, B, C’s!!!!!

With this system in place, there is definitely something for everyone.

And as I always recommend, if you’re interested in trying these makeup products for yourself or for your makeup kit, it’s worth getting the products on either side of your chosen color and tone. It allows for you to warm up your complexion, or lighten if you need to in the colder months of the year.

This is one of the truly beautiful things about buying a good product that is as affordable as The Ordinary. You can have 5 different colors and it is probably going to cost you the same as just one product of a high-end makeup brand.

The Ordinary Concealer Product Itself

So, let’s take a look at exactly what this concealer is all about.

Described on their website as a High Spreadability Pigment Suspension System with Very High Coverage. And I would have to say that this pretty much hits the nail on the head.

It’s presented in a compact, easy to use tube, so effectively you can pop the tube to your under eye area, and squeeze. Then press it out using your fingers and blend to your heart’s content.

A little really goes a long way. And yes, The Ordinary Concealer truly is coverage of the highest as described.

If you were stuck for a quick tattoo cover on your wrist, for example, this concealer would probably do the trick – if you were caught short for a last minute cover-up.

The Ordinary Concealer Colors

Aside from having a high opacity level, these concealers also contain a lot of white pigment in them.

And this explains why the concealer color appearance is even lighter than it’s Foundation counterpart.

I believe this is a conscious decision by The Ordinary, considering that it is a popular notion that the under eye area be somewhat highlighted. And while this is an incredibly popular technique in make today, it is worth discussing further.

I want to point out that if you do find your ideal shade, and intend on using it for all of your concealing (not exclusively the under eye area) then it should be noted that perhaps you should invest in a shade (or two) darker than your ideal under eye concealer tone.

You may end up highlighting your spots, or raised bumps that you’re trying to conceal, instead of concealing them. Basically by using too light a shade, you may do more harm than good.

The Ordinary Concealer Likes/Dislikes

Likes

I like that it has coverage that packs a punch.

I have been using it on it’s own. Due to the fact that for 8 – 16 hours a day I wear a mask and faceshield at work, I like knowing that the makeup I put on in the morning is going to stay on!

And this concealer does.

I also like that it doens’t settle in the creases around my eyes. Yep, I’m in my early 40’s now. And in recent years, my skin has begun to remind me of that number.

I honestly don’t mind, but makeup seems to.

And unless I remember to moisturise more than twice a day, most foundations tend to get dry and can become crepey over the course of a long day at work.

But interestingly enough, this concealer does not get crepey, crackly or separate.

And it lasts. All day.

Dislikes

So far, I have to say there are no dislikes.

I will be adding the range of colors to my professional kit, as I particularly like using The Ordinary for my background day-checker kit. So I look forward to using the product on other people, with different skin tones to my own.

So watch this space as I get to play with a wider range of the colors.

I guess for some, the lack of doe-footed sponge inside the casing may be an issue.

It isn’t for me at all. Due in no small part to the fact that I always decant products out onto a mixing palette. Or if using on myself, onto a brush, finger.

So far, so great, I say!

Currently, The Ordinary Concealer retails for a hair under $6.00. Pretty amazing. And as I mentioned, for such an affordable price point, it’s worth picking up a few shades that are close to the one you settle on for yourself.

You’d be surprised to learn how often our skin tone and color can change.

Where Can I Get The Ordinary Concealer?

It’s your best bet to always buy your The Ordinary products straight from the horse’s mouth. In the past, they have been known to advise that they do not sell on Amazon.

So beware that if you do see The Ordinary pop-up on Amazon, it’s probably through a third-party seller, and you just never know. Sometimes they hike the price up, sometimes it may not be an original product.
